Building a volcano

I am thinking of making Leah's birthday cake myself. The theme for the party is luau and I had a brainstorm today. I could bake the cake in one of those flat bundt pans and make it into a volcano! So now I need decorating ideas. What color would you frost it? How would you use edible items to decorate the top/sides/platform of the cake to make it look volcano-like?

All you creative types, let me hear from you!

Awesome. I think rolled fondant would work well for the sides (gray) and flowing lava. Crushed up oreos or chocolate wafer cookies (they sell them near the ice cream cones) make great dirt. Shredded coconut tinted with green food coloring is an easy grass. I'm sure you know all this already. I've seen candy 'rocks' in the past, which could be good on there too .. hmm i'll keep thinking :)

What a great idea! That's an easy one to decorate too. :)

I'm not skilled enough for fondant (but if you can do it.. go for it!), so if I were doing it I would just use chocolate icing or tinted white icing. Erica's idea for dirt is great (put the oreos in a blender about 3-4 at a time... it takes a while but totally looks like dirt). For the victims (if that isn't too gruesome for a 3 year old's bday party) could just be little miniature people or animals that I've seen at Toys R Us or JoAnn's. For the lava... I'd use red icing or... wait... I just googled "volcano cake" and there are lots of ideas out there. You can even make it erupt! I'm sure you'll find some great things online. :) Can't wait to see your version.

Again, great idea! I never would've thought of that cake for a luau! Love it!

Sorry... me again... :)
Target has mini dinosaurs in their "1 spot" right now. They have had them for the past few weeks, but the last time that I went and looked for them there was only one left here so they might be out now. If they are out, let me know and I'll send you my pack to borrow. :)

Sounds cool! I can't wait to see pictures. I am too tired to even think about how you would go about doing it though! Sorry, no creative juices after working and then unpacking all day.

You could get a few fake palm trees to put around the base. Even if you don't do the fondant a brown frosting would probably work. If you put an upside cone in the middle of the bundt cake and do an orange glaze dripping down it.
